The Mountain Club of South Africa celebrated its 125th birthday on 8 October 2016. Many members and friends have joined in climbing at least 125 routes, hills and peaks; especially on 8 October 2016, but also during the period of 1 to 16 October 2016. One aim was to increase awareness about the Club and mountains but the second was also to mountaineer, climb and have fun!The oldest participant, Merv Prior (91-years-old) rock-climbed on Arch Rock at Keurboomstrand and the youngest participant Alex Harvey (8-months-old) was in a carrier on his father’s back on the Magaliesberg near Wonderboom. At one event – the Priors – four generations were present and the Maggs managed three.
Interesting peaks summited outside SA included Mt Jeonwu in South Korea, a volcano – Piton de la Fournaise – in Reunion and Mt Kosciuszko in Australia. A night mountain rescue practice was conducted. Some fun events also took place such as a formal dinner on top of the Drakensberg at Mount-aux-Sources and pizza-and-poker on Popple Peak.
